We've all heard the old saying "if anything can go wrong it will", these words of wisdom have been passed down through the generations and there is no clear indication of who first coined the phrase. I'm not even sure when I first heard it but I do know it is as real as the laws attributed to Newton, Hubble and Marconi.
That things go wrong is seldom a surprise to anyone, what is a surprise is the willingness with which people accept things going wrong and then responding to the chaos that ensues. Why do we do this? Is it complacency, apathy, laziness or a misguided belief that another level of authority will take care of us?
There has been considerable research in to the subject and countless papers have been written but what is required is a transformative shift. An acceptance by families, local governments and other organizations that there are certain things we can do now to mitigate the impact of Murphy's Law and to build a resilient society locally, nationally and globally.
In the coming weeks I am going to look into why people don't better prepare for when things go wrong, stay tuned.
